Bryce Campbell Joins The Austin Gilgronis
The Austin Gilgronis have confirmed the long rumoured signing of USA Eagles Centre Bryce Campbell, for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. Campbell is one of the most well know USA players and it a top class midfielder. He has previous experience in Major League Rugby, where he helped the Glendale Raptors reach the 2018 Final. He will now reunite with former Raptors teammate Will Magie in Austin. As we have previously mentioned, the Gilgronis are quietly developing a very competitive squad and could be a surprise contender next season. Bryce Campbell will only boost those chances and is a signing of the highest calibre.
The 26 year old Centre, already has 32 International caps and has scored 8 tries for his country. The former Rudy Scholz Award winner featured for the USA at the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Campbell was a star at collegiate level, with Indiana University. The two time All-American didn’t take long to earn his first international cap and debuted in 2016. He has been a major player since. Campbell’s career has already taken him all over the world and he has gained experience from playing abroad. He has spent time playing for Southern Districts (Australia), London Irish (England) and currently with the Ohio Aviators, at the Bermuda World Tens Series. Campbell was a key player, as London Irish earned promotion to the Premiership in England.
Campbell has now returned for another crack at the MLR Shield and returns to be a leader of this Gilgronis side. He has the experience of playing at top level and is a seasoned International now. He could be exactly the signing this side needed and will marshal the backline from the midfield. Recent draft signing Lui Sitama will learn a huge amount from Bryce Campbell and should develop nicely with him as his mentor. Another big off season signing and another step in the right direction for Austin.
What They Said:
Austin Gilgronis Head Coach Sam Harris:
“Bryce could potentially be the face of the club moving forward, but I will leave that decision to my marketing team”
“I can say he will definitely be part of our leadership group, Bryce is an extremely valuable asset to the organization and brings a level of professionalism and expectation on and off the field. He is an exceptional talent that is right up there with the best in the USA.”
Harris on Will Magie’s recommendation:
“Different players have made me aware of other players that they have played with that they would deem a good fit for the AGs and I would take over from there,” s
“Camaraderie is high in my list of values and I am all about enjoying your work and sharing that experience with your mates.”
“Bringing an MLR shield home to Austin is the goal first and foremost,”
“For me, I want to be the best version of myself for me and for my team.”
“Will (Magie) and I are obviously very close friends, we were roommates back in Denver and we’ve been around each other alot through Eagles tours and the World Cup and now Bermuda,”
“He’s definitely played a huge role in getting me to Austin and his words carried a lot of weight when he explained the excitement around the city and the AG’s setup.”
“I’ve always had high expectations for myself as a leader, but with the Eagles, I was the younger guy, then in London I was ‘the American’, so this last year I’ve really challenged myself to be the kind of leader I know I can be and I hope the guys get around that and I think they will,”
