Worcester Warriors Sign Forward Duo

Worcester Warriors have signed two quality and experienced forwards, ahead of the 2020/21 Gallagher Premiership Season. Lock George Merrick and Loosehead Prop Marc Thomas are both heading the Sixways. Merrick will be well known to Premiership fans, form his time with Harlequins. The big Second Row spent the last season with Clermont Auvergne and will add some serious bulk to the Warriors pack. Thomas joins after a short term spell with Harlequins last season. He is an experienced Prop who has played for a number of top clubs in England and Wales. Both players will provide injury cover and bring some real competition for places at the club.

Worcester Warriors’ Director of Rugby Alan Solomons:

“Both George and Marc will provide invaluable cover for us in what will be an arduous season,”

“George is a really big man with heaps of Premiership experience and we are most fortunate to have secured his services.

“Marc is an experienced player and a good scrummager who comes to us after a spell with Harlequins.

“Both lads have fitted in well here at Sixways and I have no doubt that they will make their mark. I look forward to working with them.”

Welsh Clubs Split 20 Million Pound Loan

Wales’ four professional teams have agreed how they will share a £20m loan designed to help them avoid financial collapse during the coronavirus pandemic. Scarlets will receive £5.5m, Cardiff Blues and Ospreys £5m each, and Dragons £4.5m via a deal the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) negotiated with NatWest Cymru. Each region has agreed to repay its loan over a five-year period.

Munster V Benneton Postponed

The coming game between Munster and Benneton Treviso, in the PRO 14, has been postponed. Benneton have recorded a number of positive Covid-19 cases and the fixture is no longer safe to run. Meanwhile, in good news for Munster, they have signed Ireland Under 20s Scrum Half Ben Murphy, on a short term deal. Murphy is a part of the Leinster Academy, but with Connor Murray away on International duty, they needed some cover.

Coach Rob Taylor Leaves Leicester Tigers

Leicester Tigers Attack Coach Rob Taylor has departed the club. Taylor had arrived from Australia, before this season and had begun to make strides with this young team. He has been allowed to leave his contract early on compassionate grounds. He will be replaced, on an interim basis, by Academy Coach and former first team player Matt Smith.

“On behalf of the players, coaching team and everybody at Leicester Tigers, I thank Rob for his efforts and contribution to our club,” said Borthwick.

“It has been a shorter stay than we would have all hoped, but we are grateful for what he has given to Tigers and wish him well in whatever comes next.”

South Africa Commit Long Term To The Rugby Championships

It is being reported that South Africa have committed their long term future to the Rugby Championships. The Springboks had recently pulled out of this years’ tournament, due to the current travel restrictions and lack of preparation time. It had been long rumoured that South Africa would look to join the Six Nations and many believed this would be the case. It is now being reported by the governing body SANZAAR that they, along with the three other unions (New Zealand, Australia & Argentina), have committed to the tournament, for the next ten years.

“The southern hemisphere rugby powers have recognised the need for change in these difficult times and have committed to an international rugby future through to 2030,”

“The re-commitment by the four unions to the long-term future of the international game is an important start as we embark in a new direction.
