England Welcome Returning Props

England Rugby have made two changes to their squad, with regular props Mako Vunipola and Kyle Sinckler returning, form injury and suspension. The two have become vital members of this England squad over the years and get through a huge amount of carrying work in attack, as well as distribution. Harry Williams (Exeter Chiefs) and Tom West (Wasps) have both returned to their clubs.

London Irish Sign Facundo Gigena

London Irish have completed the signing of Loosehead Prop Facundo Gigena. The 26-year-old joins as a free agent following his release, just one day ago, from Leicester Tigers. The Argentine International joined Leicester in January 2018 from Super Rugby team the Jaguares. He made 45 appearances in all competitions for Tigers, despite missing an entire season due to injury.

Gigena: “I am happy to be here and really looking forward to my time with London Irish.

“When the opportunity arose to join the club, I jumped at it – and I can’t wait to get started now.

Bedford Blues Prop Alex Penny Retires

Bedford Blue Tighthead Prop Alex Penny has announced hi retirement from rugby, to pursue a significant job opportunity, back home in Wiltshire. A mainstay in the team since joining the Blues in 2017, Penny made 62 appearances for the club, scoring three tries as Bedford reached the British & Irish Cup Semi-Finals and third place in the Championship table in his first season at Goldington Road.

Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer: “This news is so disappointing because Alex has been such a great addition to the club over the past few seasons. I think the pandemic is forcing a lot of people to rethink their future and we completely support Alex in making this decision. We wish him well in his next opportunity and he will be very much missed around the place, on and off the field.”

Edinburgh Rugby Sign Prop Venter

Edinburgh Rugby have signed Toyota Cheetahs Loosehead Prop Boan Venter. The 23 year old made Cheetahs debut in the 2019/20 Guinness PRO14 season, featuring in all 13 matches of the South African side’s much improved, albeit Covid-curtailed, campaign.

Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach, Richard Cockerill: “We’re delighted to add Boan to a strong stable of props at the club, creating real depth in an important area of the squad. Our scrum has developed into a real weapon for us and we’re keen to continue its improvement.

“In the past few of seasons we’ve seen our leading looseheads, Rory [Sutherland] and Pierre [Schoeman], attract widespread – and justified – praise. In the case of Rory – and potentially Pierre in time – that has also meant international selection for Scotland.

Brandon Thompson To Leave Glasgow Warriors

South African fly-half Brandon Thomson will leave Glasgow Warriors to return to the country of his birth at the end of February. Thompson will join former PRO 14 side Toyota Cheetahs, who have recently seen numerous players leave for pastures new.

Dan Lydiate Out For The Season

Dan Lydiate has sustained an injury to his ACL, whilst playing for Wales during their Six Nations win over Ireland. It is rumoured he will be out for the season, which is terrible news for a player who had done so well to get back in the National fold.
