USA Set To Host The All Blacks

The USA Eagles will play New Zealand at the home of the NFL’s Washington Football Team. The game will be played on October 23rd and the winner will be the inaugural champions of the 1874 Cup; which is a reference to the first account of organised rugby being played in the United States. The match has been planned as a regular event, in order to boost interest in the sport among American fans, in the hope that the country will be able to host one or more of the 2027, 2029 or 2031 Rugby World Cups.

Sam Cane:

“I know the team is excited about getting to America and particularly going to Washington, DC for the first time,”

“It will be a historic match with a lot of meaning behind it and we hope that the rugby fans there really get behind the game. We can’t wait.”

Olympic Sevens Recap

The two favourites Fiji and New Zealand both made their way into the Semi Finals of the Olympics with solid performances. They will meet Argentina and England respectively, after shock comeback wins by both in the Quarters. England were 21-0 down the the USA, before the latter lost a player and England launched their comeback. Argentina were dealing with their own player shortages are going down to five players against South Africa, but somehow still coming back for the win. Some fantastic games of rugby sevens on show here.

Tom Brown Returns To Ealing Trailfinders

Former Ealing Captain Tom Brown is returning to Vallis Away, as the club’s new Academy Coach. Brown, who captained Trailfinders in their famed promotion campaign of 2014/15, has a storied resume within both union and league codes, including appearances for Cardiff Blues, Newport Gwent Dragons and featuring at the 2004 U21 IRB World Championship for Wales.

Tom Brown:

“For three years I plied my trade as a teacher at Eltham College and played for Old Elthamians, starting my coaching journey with the children at the school and the club itself while playing there. I was taking lessons I learnt from my professional career and into my coaching career.

“Since then I’ve gone abroad to China for six months, and now I’ve been in Dubai for two and a half years, mainly with Dubai Hurricanes and schools out here. I’ve got a good balance of kids and adult rugby, getting that wholescale view of coaching as well”

Lions Name Second Test Team

Hogg; A Watson, Harris, Henshaw, Van der Merwe; Biggar, Murray; Vunipola, Cowan-Dickie, Furlong, Itoje, AW Jones, Lawes, Curry, Conan.

Replacements: Owens, Sutherland, Sinckler, Beirne, Faletau, Price, Farrell, Daly.

Mako Vunipola, Connor Murray and Chris Harris all come in to the starting line-up for the second Lions Test versus South Africa. The Springboks will be looking to come back strong after losing the first test. Mako Vunipola looked in good form off the bench in test one, Murray brings huge experience and control. Elliot Daly didn’t have his best game in the first test, so the Defensive abilities of Scotland’s Chris Harris will be a boost for the Lions in test two.

Frizell Dropped Following Assault Charge

All Blacks Back Row Shannon Frizell has been dropped for two games following his recent assault charge. It sounds like Frizell will be able to avoid major consequences and repent through counselling and giving back to the community but the full verdict of this case remains to be seen. For now though, we do know that Frrizell has been dropped from the All Blacks for two matches. There could well be more sanctions to come but the suspension for two matches is guaranteed.

Springboks Second Test Squad

South Africa: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Makazole Mapimpi, 10 Handré Pollard, 9 Faf de Klerk, 1 Steven Kitshoff, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 3 Frans Malherbe, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 5 Franco Mostert, 6 Siya Kolisi (c), 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 8 Jasper Wiese

Replacements: 16 Malcolm Marx, 17 Trevor Nyakane, 18 Vincent Koch, 19 Lood de Jager, 20 Marco van Staden, 21 Kwagga Smith, 22 Herschel Jantjies, 23 Damian Willemse

The big changes come in the Pack for the Springboks. Leicester Tigers Number 8 Jasper Wiese has been drafted in to give some powerful carrying off the base. The two props has been switched with last weeks bench duo Kitschoff and Malherbe now starting.

Edinburgh Bring In Argentina Duo

Edinburgh has signed Back Three players Emiliano Bofelli and Romiro Moyano for next season. 36 cap Moyano signs from Youlon and the 31 year old brings huge experience and skill to the back three, with ability to cover Wing and Full Back. Bofelli is one of the best backs Argentina have produced. The 26 year old recently left French giants Racing 92 and will join up with the club after his commitments with Argentina at the Rugby Championship. Bofelli is comfortable at Full Back, Wing and in the Centres. He has a booming boot and devastating running skills. Two great signings for Edinburgh and the two Scottish teams are now loaded with attacking threats.

Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach Mike Blair: “Edinburgh Rugby have been in contact with both players for some time now, so it’s a real boost to have them join what is an already talented squad.

“I’m really excited to see both players perform and develop alongside our young Scottish talent. Competition for places is vital, so it’ll be great to see our younger stars improve and benefit from playing alongside guys of their international calibre.

“Both players have the capability to get supporters off their seats. Their arrivals, coupled with record season ticket sales for our new home, really adds to the excitement and anticipation for the coming season.”
