Daily Round Up – 29/07/2021 – Rassie’s Video & Schonert To Sale
Saints To Host Ospreys In Pre-Season
Northampton Saints will play Welsh side Ospreys on Friday the 10th Of September, at Franklin’s Gardens. The 7:30pm Kick Off game will be just one week before the Premiership season is due to begin and will be good preparation for Chris Boyd’s men. It will also be a chance to welcome back former Saints players George North and Stephen Myler.
Sale Sharks Sign Nic Schonert
Sale Sharks have added further front row power, ahead of the 2021/22 Premiership Rugby Season, by signing Worcester Warriors Tighthead Nic Schonert. The Sharks have already recruited their former Academy duo Tommy Taylor and Simon McIntyre from Wasps and now they have added serious scrummaging power at Tighthead. Those three players alone form a pretty formidable front row trio and Sale are already strong in that area, with the likes of Akker Van Der Merwe and Ross Harrison on the books. This move had been on the books for a while, but Sale have confirmed it today and it looks to be a great bit of business.
29 year old Schonert joined Worcester Warriors in 2014 from his native South Africa. The former Sharks, Griquas and Free State Cheetahs player has consistently been one of Worcester’s top performers ever since. He had been rumoured to be leaving on numerous occasions, with his scrummaging prowess being sort after by many clubs. The former South Africa Under 20s player also qualifies for England, through his Grandmother, and was called into Eddie Jones’s 2017 Autumn Squad. A strong signing by Sale and Schonert should be helping them fight at the top end of the table again next season.
“ I’m so excited to be part of such an incredible group here at the Sharks. At the stage I am at in my career I felt that it was the right time for a change in direction and for me to take myself out of my comfort zone.
“When I got the call from Sale in March it felt like the stars had aligned and I genuinely had to pinch myself to check if I wasn’t dreaming.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this squad and just hope I can add value wherever I can.”
Rassie Erasmus Criticises Refereeing
South Africa Director Of Rugby Rassie Erasmus has continued to criticise the officiating from the first Lions Test. He has now taken to video to analyse some of the decisions and make his points. The video in question is 62 minutes long and even includes Erasmus offering to step away from the Springboks Camp.

Scotland To Face Tonga In Autumn
Scotland and Tonga have opted to extend their Autumn Series and play each other at Murrayfield on October 30th. Tonga last faced Scotland at Murrayfield 20 years ago in a 43-20 win for the home side in 2001. The teams have faced each other twice since then, both in Scotland, with a win apiece in fixtures played in Aberdeen in 2012 and Kilmarnock in 2014.
Scottish Rugby Chief Executive Mark Dodson: “Following Scotland’s disrupted summer campaign we are pleased to be able to welcome Tonga to BT Murrayfield as part of our Autumn Nations Series.
“I’d like to thank Tonga Rugby CEO Peter Harding and the Tongan Rugby Union for their proactivity in working with us to secure this fixture to ensure we can give fans, players and coaches another test match to enjoy in 2021.
“Matches with Tonga are always competitive and physically demanding games and we feel this is the ideal way for our Autumn Nations Series to kick off and we look forward to welcoming Tonga back to Scotland.”
