Gilgronis Sign Eagles Tighthead Prop Paddy Ryan
The Austin Gilgronis have signed USA Eagles Tighthead Prop Paddy Ryan, for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. Ryan is well known as one of the most destructive scrummagers in Major League Rugby. This wont be his first time in Austin, as he was a part of the original Major League Rugby group, with the Austin Elite. He then went on to play two seasons with Rugby United New York (RUNY), where he continued to add to his scrummaging reputation and helped the roosters to a Semi Final Appearance, in 2009. Ryan will now add his significant power, to this Austin Gilrgonis side, that are beginning to look like real contenders. They have recruited some top class players, in a variety of positions and look set to play some exciting rugby next season. Paddy Ryan will offer them the chance to play that fast paced and powerful rugby, with his solid set piece and all round impact on a game.
Paddy Ryan has played all over the world and developed a skillset that earned him four caps for the USA Eagles. He has played for Viadana (Italy), London Welsh (English Championship) and the Newcastle Falcons (English Premiership). It was his performances for the Falcons that really caught the eye. He managed seven Premiership appearances, during that time and did not look out of place, at that extremely high level of rugby. The Irish/American then embarked on his Major League Rugby career and has taken the league by storm. Most recently, Ryan has been playing for the Ohio Aviators, in the Bermuda World Tens Series. He now joins an impressive group of Props, at the Gilgronis, including Mason Pederson, Jamie MacKintosh, and LaRome White. They look set to strike fear into opponents scrums, with some serious power and bulk, particularly with the Second Row power of Sebastian De Chaves and Christian Ostberg coming through. Ryan will hope that strong performances, for the Gilgronis, will lead to further Eagles appearances.
What They Said:
“I definitely think we’ll make the playoffs and we’ll be making a push for the shield come May,”
“There’s a lot of new faces and a shortened pre-season so that’s a challenge, but the coaches and owner want us to gel quickly and they’ve got some good ideas and we’ve got a very very good facility which will help a lot.”
“However we win, that will show who we are,”
“Whether we’re ruthless and mean or flashy and fast; it will show through when we win – I know what style I like, but this game is all about adapting, ya know?”
Austin Gilgronis Head Coach Sam Harris:
“We want a dominant, intimidating, Texas-sized front row,”
“That’s what we’ve built here this off-season, Paddy is widely regarded as the best domestic scrummaging tighthead in America and he adds just the kind of mean muscle we need.”
“Paddy also gives our pack that bit of bully you need, he has built a reputation as an enforcer.” says Harris. “I want him to grow that within the group; we won’t be taking a backward step to anybody.”
