Sale Sharks Sign Lock JP Du Preez
Sale Sharks have announced the signing of South African Second Row Jean-Pierre du Preez, on a two year contract. The towering Lock Forward joins from recent PRO 14 side Cheetahs and will cover the injuries of Josh Beaumont and Lood De Jager. He won’t just provide injury cover, as Du Preez has a serious amount to offer to this side. The huge lock is the tallest ever registered Super Rugby player and the second tallest in the Premiership. He brings the obvious attributes at both Scrum and Lineout time, but he is a mobile player, who contributes around the pitch.
There has been a lot of talk about the amount of South Africans in the Sale Sharks squad. It just seems a smart tactic, on the whole. The majority are available throughout the season, without international commitments, are all quality players and Sale have brought a number of Academy players through in recent years to offset the amount of imports. The likes of the James brothers are prime examples of the local talent, that they have blended with the recruited players.
Jean-Pierre Du Preez started out his career at the Golden Lions, in the South African Currie Cup competition. He later made his Super Rugby debut for the Lions, in 2015 The 2.09 Metres tall forward made the switch to the Cheetahs in 2018 and went on to make 26 appearances, across Super Rugby and the PRO 14. The 26 year old has joined the side with immediate effect, but will not be able to train until he has completed his isolation period.
What They Said:
Sale Sharks Director of Rugby Steve Diamond:
“We were hit pretty hard with injuries in the second-row towards the back end of last season and with Lood de Jager and Josh Beaumont still out, it was imperative we found the right person to come in and ease the load in that area. JP comes from South Africa with great pedigree and is a huge lad with a good skillset so I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do in the Gallagher Premiership.”
