Solomon Alaimalo Joins The Highlanders
The Highlanders have announced the signing of Chiefs Back Three player Solomon Alaimalo. The exciting outside back has signed a three year deal with the South Island club, which will take him through to the end of the 2023 Super Rugby season. Alaimalo impressed in a struggling Chiefs side, during the 2020 Super Rugby Aotearoa season. He sustained a bad injury, in the act of scoring a try, that has kept him out of the current Mitre 10 Cup competition. The Highlanders had been vocal about their search for a new outside back and they have found a superb one in Alaimalo. Their recruitment has been very interesting so far, with the likes of Billy Harmon and Kazuki Himeno boosting their Back Row and now Alaimalo adding his potent skills out wide.
The Auckland born 24 year old came through St.Bede’s College, before signing for Mitre 10 side Northland, in 2016. After two years at Northland, Alaimalo spent a season with Tasman. A move to Waikato followed and his impressive form, lead to a Super Rugby call up, with the Chiefs. The Winger/Full Back spent the last three years with the Chiefs and recorded 21 tries in 44 games. He made his debut in 2017, but it has been the last couple of seasons, where he really cemented his spot as a starter. He has everything you want in an outside back and his pace is a real asset. Another shrewd signing by the Highlanders, who are building nicely for 2021.
What They Said:
“the Highlanders play an attractive brand of rugby and of course playing under the roof tend to makes the game a bit faster and the outside backs tend to see plenty of the ball, all of that suits me fine.”
“I enjoyed every minute of my time with the Chiefs but im looking forward to this opportunity down south to compete and add value where I can.”
Highlanders Head Coach Tony Brown:
“we’ve been looking for a big outside back to add to our squad and Solomon is a big man who has good aerial skills combined with strength and pace and will be a welcome addition to our back three.”
